Safe Clean Water

Clean water is essential to life and many of our schools do not have access to a source of clean water.

Students walk long distances to gather water - sometimes from wells but more often from ponds where cows gather and drink.

We can help provide water two ways.  Water collection with gutters on roof tops that collect into 5000-liter tanks and with bore holes which are deep water wells. Water collection from roofs is simple and fairly low cost but is only good during rainy seasons about 6 months of the year.  When possible, we raise money and

In 2025 we have installed one machine dug well and are in the process of adding two more.  We have also installed gutters and water collection in two schools.

Sanitation

When schools are built they are typically provided one 4-stall pit latrine.  This is adequate for a school of 150 students and teachers.  As schools grow, the government rarely steps in and adds sanitary resources.

Help from organizations like Hydro missions International and African Children’s Mission are critical to keeping up with sanitation needs.  If we contribute to the costs, Hydromission takes care of the site digging and building of the new latrines.  We are having our first latrine installed in 2025 at Kyambogo Primary.  The school has more than tripled in size and has only its original 4-stall latrine.

Cost $2,000

Solar

Many of the schools we support are quite a distance from access to power.  Even when schools are in town the power in our area is unreliable.  Despite that, older students are required to have evening study times to prepare for national exams. We are able to provide a solar panel, battery and lights for 3 classrooms and the office.

Cost $300

Desks

The government provides a minimum number of desks for each school and occasionally adds.  A desk will seat 4 young students, 3 middle class students and 2 older students.  One of our schools that currently has 570 students had 58 desks.  The government recently added 20 more.  We have recently ordered an additional 20.

Cost - Each desk costs $53

Kitchen

Before we start providing posho for lunch we require the school to have a rudimentary kitchen as well as secure storage for the dry posho and beans. Because schools have grown so much since starting feeding, some schools need an upgrade to a larger and more practical kitchen.  These upgrades are done with the help of parents to provide labor.

Cost $1500
